Shape note singing in Berlin
We are a small but growing group of Berlin residents from all over the world (that's why this page is in English!) Currently we have singers from Germany, England, Ireland, USA, Canada, South Africa, France and Israel.
The one thing we have in common is our love for singing shape note music. We meet every week and sing from the 1991 Denson Edition ("the red book") of the Sacred Harp. If you want to sing with us, you don't need anything: we have loaner books, and regularly order new books from the USA so that you can purchase one if you would like to.
We are NOT a choir! We don't have a leader (everyone takes turns in leading songs), we don't have a repertoire (just our book) and we don't rehearse - we just sing.
You don't need to apply or to audition - you don't even have to know how to read music (although it helps). Just come by and try it out.
There are also other shape note books: the newest one is the "Shenandoah Harmony". Recently we obtained a couple of books as a gift from the Polish singers who in turn had been given them from Richard Schmeidler, Massachusetts. Every second week, we dedicate half of our singing session to the Shenandoah Harmony!
Shape Note music is loud, raw, raucous, very emotional - and very religious. But it doesn't matter whether you are a Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Atheist... people of all faiths sing Sacred Harp. We are not a cult ;-) we just love the music.
